"Where to stay in Puerto Escondido" is a common question asked by people planning a trip to this beautiful part of southern Mexico. Being a tourist town Puerto Escondido has many places to stay. Some places are really good and some are not that good. Here are our tips on where to stay when in Puerto Escondido.

Places for surfers

Surfers want to stay as close as possible to the waves they will be surfing. Good surfers will want a place near Zicatela beach break. For those learning to surf a better place to stay would be at La Punta or near Carrizalillo. Surfers who will stay more than 1 or 2 weeks often find longer term stays in the many comfortable yet affordable hotels walking distance for the main surf beach in the colony named Santa Maria.

Places for families

A family with small children will often want to stay near beaches that are safe for their kids to swim at. The safest places for kids are Puerto Angelito, Marinero, Carrizalillo or La Punta when the surf isn't too big. There is a wide range of styles of accommodation to deciding on where to stay will normally be controlled by your budget.

Places for backpackers

Backpackers like to stay at the most economical places like hostels. There are very affordable places to stay scattered all around Puerto Escondido so unless you are coming at a very busy time of year, you can normally just arrive and ask other backpackers for suggestions on what is good at that moment.

Places for retires

People who have retired often prefer to stay in quieter spots away from the young party crowd. There are some nice new apartments in Bacocho that overlook the ocean or others may prefer renting a house or small unit in the same area. Rinconada has good fine dining so many older folk tend to appreciate being located near there.
