When you are in Puerto Escondido you will wonder what there is to do. The good thing is that there are many things to do but what you do will depend on what you like to do. Here is a quick list of some things to do in Puerto Escondido.
What to do in Puerto Escondido
Below is not a full list but it should be extensive enough to show you that there are many things to do in Puerto Escondido.
- Surf the many great waves of and near Puerto Escondido
- Take a surf class and learn to surf from experienced instructors
- Hire a motor bike, 4 wheel bike, car, vehicle or van with driver and explore the surrounding areas
- Go fishing on the beach, in a boat in the sea or in the lagoons or rivers
- See the coast line on a kayak, jet-ski or on an inflatable banana pulled by a local fishing boat
- View the marine life like turtles and dolphins from a local fishing boat
- Get some gear and go scuba diving or snorkelling in the many beautiful bays
- Ride a horse on the Zicatela beach as you watch the sunset over the water
- Catch up on your exercise by walking (or jogging if you are really keen) along the beaches in the early mornings before it gets too hot
- Eat at La Juqileña restaurant and many of the other world renowned restaurants and cafes located all around Puerto Escondido
- Relax and swim in the hotel pools or at the beach clubs
- Take a day trip to some nearby waterfalls
- Try your hand at shopping at the big local market which is especially busy Wednesday's and Saturday's and Sunday's when other vendors come from the surrounding mountains to sell their wares
- Visit the weekend street market (next to the soccer field) opposite the main market in town
- Browse the many smaller shops in the main Ave. Oaxava and side streets. [Tip: Start at the top and walk down the hill :) ]
- Shop for souvenirs after sunset in the tourist strip called the Adoquin where there are also many craft stalls set-up.
- Take a boat tour of the Maniltapec lagoon to see the huge range of wildlife and bird species
- Attend the festivals and cultural dances that are often happening throughout the year
- Take Spanish language lessons so you can communicate better
- Visit the iguana sanctuary near Chila or take a tour of the native plants at the botanic gardens on the road to San Pedro which are both operated by the local university
- Try out the local 'colectivo' transport by getting a ride in the many pickup trucks that take people to and from town.
So as you can see by the list above, there are many things to do in Puerto Escondido.
