There are good waves most of the year at Puerto Escondido. The big waves and many more surfers arrive and stay for the rainy season which happens from about May or June to September or October. July is crowded but always has good waves. The surf conditions change often so if you are coming for surfing then plan to stay a few weeks to ensure you get a few good swells and killer sessions with good waves.

The water is warm (some would say hot) nearly all year around but when some swells arrive they can bring a cold change in the water temperature. Depending on where you are coming from will depend on what you wear when you are surfing.

Mid year is when the water is the warmest so board shorts is all that will be needed. A thin spring suit might be useful for some days near Christmas when the water can be fresh. Most use a rash vest to help protect them from the sun's rays which tend to burn fair skin fast.

If possible, when you do come to Puerto Escondido to surf bring a few boards as you will 99% be likely to break or crease one. You can get surfboards fixed in one day usually but your session will be cut short if you don't have a backup board. There are locals who can affordably repair bodyboards too.

There is no shortage of locals who would be keen to buy surf gear before you head home (should you be willing to do them good deals). Puerto Escondido also has a few beach photographers some of whom are shooting most days. If you want some photos make sure you talk to them on the beach or in the water.

Advice for Visitors

Use the Local Transport

Most days the temperature is very, very hot (above 30 degrees celcius) so it is wise to use the many taxis or other affordable means of transport and not walk around in the heat if you don't need to.
