The community that makes up Puerto Escondido is actually two municipalities. The dividing line is at the bridge at the bottom of the main hill on the highway to Huatulco. Zicatela beach is in the jurisdiction of the Santa Maria Colotepec council while the Adoquin and Centro are governed by San Pedro Mixtepec council.

The sign near Agencia in town currently says there are 44 thousand inhabitants. This increases 3 fold in the busy seasons of Christmas and Easter. During the busy vacation times Puerto Escondido mostly sees Mexican tourists, while foreign tourists from all over the world visit Puerto Escondido steadily throughout the rest of the year.

Puerto Escondido is a great place and is growing in population by the day. At present the governments are doing major road constructions as well as remodelling the Zicatela beach strip. The works should be finished in a few months time.
