October in Puerto Escondido is normally quieter and not so hot with much of the rain all but finished until next May. The mornings temperatures can feel a bit fresh but within a few hours the hot day has arrived. Daylight savings (summer time) ends in October meaning the sun will start to appear over the hills around 6am giving people more early daylight to do things like stroll along the beach at sunrise.

The month of November is special in Puerto Escondido and during October people are preparing for the festivities in the following month when more visitors will be in town. The surfers in town at this time often enjoy good swells with a much smaller crowd than say mid-year. The water is still not cold but the good off-shore morning winds might make some surfers feel warm in the water than on the land.

Many visitors to Puerto Escondido will have a lovely time watching from the action of these surfers riding the waves at Zicatela, La Punta, Marinero or Carrizalillo bay. At any of these locations at varying times of the day people will see a wide variety of surfers enjoying the waves of the ocean.

Advice for Visitors

Travelling with a Surfboard or Bodyboard

A few years ago the airline companies who service Puerto Escondido (PXM) began charging for all surfboards or bodyboards a traveller wants to leave with. The price per board is $60USD. The check-in clerks will open your board bags and count how many boards are in the surfboard bag and multiply that quantity by $60USD. This luggage fee can be paid in cash or with the airports credit card facilities.
