Zicatela Beach

The most famous beach in Puerto Escondido is Zicatela beach. It is a long wide beach that runs for a few miles and has lovely golden sand (when the rain hasn't washed all the rubbish from the local colonies onto it). It is well known as having one of the best surfing waves in the world.

Most of the year visitors to Zicatela beach can enjoy watching the sunset over the ocean horizon. Many people come out in the last few hours of daylight to surf or walk since the hot sun is no longer so strong. 

An enjoyable activity is to take a horse ride the length of the beach. It costs very little and will allow you to see much more os Zicatela than you would normal walk.

Those weak swimmers should not enter the water at this beach. Too many people have drowned in the past due to the strong currents and the lifeguards have a hard enough job watching the many surfers out each day. If you do need to swim, please swim directly in front of the lifeguards and obey the advice of the lifeguards on how to swim safely.
