Accessing Money
Accessing Money
While you're in Puerto Escondido you can easily access your funds. There are quite a few bank ATM's throughout the town and in the tourist areas. The major super market Super Che also has ATM's located near the checkouts in the corridor to the bathrooms. The banks have 24 hour ATM's and limit the withdrawals to $5000MXN per day per account.
If you need to access more than $5000MXN from one account in one day, you can go to a teller inside a bank and using your credit card access up to about $30,000MXN per day. The bank will want to see and photocopy your passport and normally you need to go to the information counter first to arrange for the withdrawal. HSBC is a good place to do transactions such as this but there is always a long line of people waiting to be served. Banks open from 8am so if you go first thing in the morning the line will be shorter.
Only a very few places will accept US dollars or have credit/debit card facilities so plan to always use local currency to avoid being caught out. There are a couple of money exchanges in the more touristy areas who will be able to exchange your international currencies like Euros and US or Canadian Dollars. The HSBC bank does not change dollars so try elsewhere. Banamex offers a good exchange rate but take a photocopy of you passport (and the passport itself). Don't us the money exchange place near Banamex (across the road and down the hill a bit) as they will be a about 2 pesos lower than anywhere else.
